Trekking the Waterways
A slow adventure is the ideal way to explore and enjoy a landscape, its wildlife, people and hidden gems. The ‘Trekking the Waterways’ experience was designed with all of this in mind.
While this may be a slow adventure, it is not lacking in adventure nor new experiences. You will explore and enjoy Leitrim’s unspoilt countryside by horseback and by bicycle. Your day also includes a visit to Ireland’s new, fully-operational and authentic distillery, The Shed Distillery. It also includes a slow food experience in the stunning Jackalope Café.
Your experience begins with you on horseback, exploring the countryside and its rugged terrain. You will be taken on a horse trek along the water’s edge on the shores of Lough Allen. This tranquil journey will set you up for the day. You will enjoy the scenery of this unspoiled countryside, overlooked by the Sliabh an Iarainn Mountain range.
Visit The Shed Distillery
Once you dismount, you will be guided by bike to The Shed Distillery, home to Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin. Here you will explore the curious mind of PJ Rigney as you enjoy a guided tour. The tour includes a special tasting of the Drumshanbo Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey and the exotic Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin in the exotic Botanical Glass House.
Before you take your leave from this truly intriguing distillery, you will enjoy a slow food experience at the Jackalope Café. The Café is known not only for its excellent cuisine but also its creative decor. A visit to the Jackalope Café is an experience in itself and yet another insight into the creative mind of this ingenious inventor.
Trekking the Waterways continues by bicycle
Following your visit to The Shed Distillery, your adventure continues by bicycle. You will pedal along the riverbanks of the tranquil and unspoiled scenery that is the Shannon Blueway. On your return journey you will be surrounded by natural beauty and wildlife, all that makes this corner of Ireland one of its best kept secrets.
